The Third Culture Bakery Story

We are Third Culture Bakery, home of the Original Mochi Muffin, butter mochi donuts, and other foods and drinks inspired by our upbringing as Third Culture Kids—kids who grew up in a culture different than that of their parent’s.

After falling in love in Berkeley, CA, Chef Sam Butarbutar and Wenter Shyu started their bakery journey together in 2016, offering pastries reflective of their childhood in Indonesia and Taiwan.  Building a bakery to become a symbol of diversity, inclusiveness, and acceptance.

THE MOCHI MUFFIN

Inspired by an Indonesian dessert his mom used to make, Chef Sam Butarbutar created the Mochi Muffin in 2014. Born out of a desire to create something new that remains culturally relevant and told a story of nostalgia, Chef Sam Butarbutar hopes that his creations can spark conversations and dialogues with every bite.

Locations

Opened in 2018, our West Berkeley Showroom offers the full Third Culture experience—our entire lineup of pastries, mochi waffles, and matcha beverages.  Our flagship location showcases our mission of inclusivity, acceptance, and love.
